Globetrotters provided construction management services for the $11 million improvement of Torrence Avenue over Grand Calumet River, located north of 139th Street to south of 136th Street in Cook County, Illinois.
In addition to overseeing the demolition of the existing truss bridge and precast pre-stressed concrete (PPC) box beam approach spans, Globetrotters managed the construction of a 3-span structure with welded plate girders superstructure, reinforced concrete deck, and sidewalks/shared use path supported on new H-pile supported stub abutments, two new multi-column drilled shaft supported piers, and new approach slabs.
The new structure accommodates bicyclist and pedestrians per the Complete Streets Guidelines. Adjacent road work was required to taper the structure’s width back to the existing roadway width. Retaining walls provided the necessary embankments to support the widened structure while staying within the project right-of-way.
